How did the Gemini Alliance Perform in the First Five Months of 2025?
The newly formed Gemini Alliance — a strategic partnership between Maersk and Hapag-Lloyd — is making a powerful impression on the global shipping stage. In April 2025, the alliance recorded an impressive 90.7% schedule reliability, according to fresh data from maritime data company Sea-Intelligence — the highest among all major carriers.
This marks the second month in a row that Gemini Cooperation has crossed the 90% threshold, a rare achievement in an industry still grappling with widespread supply chain disruptions.
At the core of Gemini Alliance's success is a bold redesign of its shipping network. By reducing the number of port calls on East-West routes and shifting to a hub-and-spoke model, the alliance has streamlined operations, improved transit times, and enhanced reliability. The result? Fewer delays and a more predictable service — a game-changer for global shippers.
For context, MSC posted a 69.8% on-time rate in April, while the Premier Alliance — which includes ONE, HMM, and Yang Ming — lagged behind at 53.0%.
Sea-Intelligence also highlighted that April saw the highest global schedule reliability in 17 months, with the industry average climbing to 58.7%. Among individual carriers, Maersk led with 73.4%, followed by Hapag-Lloyd at 72.3%, and MSC at 60.7%.
In sharp contrast, older alliances continue to struggle. March data showed the Ocean Alliance at 54.9%, 2M at 43.1%, and THE Alliance at 46.5%. These numbers highlight a growing divide in performance — with Gemini pulling ahead as the new standard-bearer for reliability.
The Sea-Intelligence report also noted a change in how schedule reliability is measured. Traditionally, reliability was based on arrival times at final destination ports. But due to limited data from February — when new alliances were still ramping up — the current figures are based on "All Arrivals" covering both departure and arrival points. A standardized method is expected to return as data becomes more complete.
Overall, the trend across the industry is positive. In March, global reliability rose by three percentage points from February, reaching its highest level since November 2023. Year-over-year, the improvement was also three percentage points — a sign that carriers are making real progress in tightening schedules and raising service levels.
In this evolving landscape, the Gemini Alliance isn't just outperforming legacy groupings — it's reshaping expectations. With its strong reliability and forward-thinking network design, Gemini is setting a new course for ocean shipping: faster, leaner, and more dependable.
