China to North America

Market Recap: July, 2025

Spot rates on the Transpacific Eastbound route (China to US West Coast) have remained subdued, averaging around $2,000–$2,200/FEU, down from $2,500/FEU in early July. The US East Coast rates are holding slightly higher at $2,900–$3,100/FEU, reflecting longer transit times and limited capacity.

The market has softened as uncertainty over potential new US tariffs on Chinese goods continues to weigh on shipper sentiment. As a result, booking volumes have declined by 10–15% month-over-month, with many BCOs (Beneficial Cargo Owners) delaying shipments or negotiating shorter-term contracts.

Despite the lower demand, carriers have responded by trimming capacity—blank sailings accounted for approximately 15% of total deployed capacity in the last two weeks of July. This has helped prevent further rate erosion, with current levels considered close to or at the bottom.

August Outlook

Freight Rate Trend: Rates remain at a low level

  • Early August: Rates are expected to remain soft as demand stays muted.
  • Late August: Market sentiment may shift depending on tariff policy developments and back-to-school retail replenishment, but outlook remains cautious.

Overall, uncertainty will persist, and any significant rate recovery is unlikely unless a strong demand rebound occurs or further capacity tightening is implemented.
